HealingUS Communities’ Overdose Awareness Vigil on August 31st, 2026

  • Reading time:2 mins read

HealingUS Communities will host its annual Overdose Awareness Vigil on Monday, August 31, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm at 260 Casino Drive in Farmingdale, NJ. The gathering will unite the wider community to honor lives lost to overdose, support grieving families, and stand beside those who continue to fight. We invite everyone to light the night with memories and love. The vigil will provide a shared space for remembrance, connection, and comfort. It will remind families affected by overdose loss that they do not have to carry their grief alone.

The impact of an overdose extends far beyond one individual. It touches parents, children, siblings, friends, and entire communities. The wide impact of such loss signifies that the discourse surrounding addiction needs to be destigmatized, where people are met with care and compassion. People experiencing substance use challenges should also be treated with dignity and given meaningful support on the path toward recovery.

“Overdose awareness is about more than remembering who we lost. This day is about refusing to let shame bury the people still here, showing them that they are loved and a path towards healing exists. HealingUS Communities gave me a place where recovery became possible, where pain could become purpose and surviving could become living. During the vigil, we carry the names of those we lost and the hope of those still fighting.”

August 31 is recognized as Overdose Awareness Day. People around the world observe the day by honoring lives lost, educating families and peers, and promoting overdose prevention. The 2026 observance marks the campaign’s 25th year.

The vigil is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend. The evening will hold space for both grief and hope while strengthening the relationships that help make recovery possible.
